A slightly dated saying, which refers to the old pre-decimal coins.

Admittedly a lot heavier but even when buying sweets, you could get far more for your pocket money

Since those long-gone days and the devaluation of the value of the new coins, and more recently rising prices

It now seems to say is more relevant than ever

With this in mind, I have created some money saying ideas

1: When shopping in supermarkets, look around the shelves for the shop’s own brand of well-known products

In most cases, the quality is good and they are cheaper!

2: Take advantage of any apps or bonus cards to increase savings

3: When buying fruit such as clementines look for loser outer skins, as they will be easier to peel and mostly riper

Other fruit also benefits from choosing a darker coloured outer skin as they also are riper Such as Honey Dew Melon

 4: Bananas are at their best with skins that are spotted

5: Shopping online can save travelling expenses, but there are normally delivery charges

But some places offer free delivery if you spend a quoted amount

6: Add foil wrapping to opened lids of Horlicks to stop dampness rendering the drink solid

This also applies to sugar stored in jars

Married Life as a Care Giver

How I became married and became a caregiver to my wife of 41 years this June

Even though there have been many assorted problems, including medication-related side effects

I could honestly say, even though we have been through many difficult times, I could never consider our married life to be dull

Throughout all the years my wife Carol has never moaned or complained, although she gets upset when she knows she had an epileptic seizure

But soon bounces back into her chirpy happy little self, along with a dose of mischievousness

Even though I knew nothing about the epilithic condition when we got married, but then I knew nothing about what’s involved in being married

Which was quite an eye-opening shock, after 28 years of a single life, living at home with my parents

To suddenly find myself thrust into the unfamiliar responsibility, of sorting out and paying bills, but also becoming a caregiver and all that entails

Which includes ordering the medication prescriptions, daily sorting out the tablets and making sure my wife takes them

Not that she is totally incapable of managing the medication herself, as she knows how many tablets to take during the day, but not which actual tablets are for the morning – dinnertime and night-time

Somewhere during our first year of marriage, I took on the role of cooking meals, and I continue to do so even now

Along with shopping, I have become a jack of all trades, or as I like to say “Head chef and bottle washer”  < I have linked this phrase to Google search

The Upcycle vs Recycle

When I first started my Blogger blog about recycling, I thought recycling included making anything discarded and turning it into a new item

Well, it seems I was wrong and I admit it! 

Upcycling is transforming an old disused item into a new and usable and even transforming it into a saleable item

While there may be those who upcycle just for the pleasure of knowing they are doing their bit to help save the environment, there will be others who sell the finished item as well as gain the same pleasure

Only recently I saw a photograph of an upcycled item made from disused wooden pallets, which had been turned into a plant holding troughs that could be fattened to a garden fence

Someone else displayed a garden chair made from wooden pallets, with instructions on how to make your own

Although I don’t know whether either item was on sale if the instructions were to be free, or whether there was a fee to pay

One novel idea I came across, made full use of upcycling, by using empty drinks cans and drilling and placing them together to make solar panels, the finished items became a green product for sale

Because of the amount of time involved in refining and producing finished ready-to-use solar panels

Someone I met through eBay produced mood drums from empty calor gas drums but decided to produce further drums without the use of those drums which were inclined too heavy as a practical musical instrument

Sometime later while visiting Moseley village they had a farmer’s market and arts and crafts stalls too

With one where they had somehow flattened glass bottles, still with the label on and some had been converted into clocks
